Jedes Jahr reisen Studenten aus Yale zum Sammeln unerforschter Organismen in den Regenwald nach Ecuador. Auf dieser Suche haben sie schon Arten entdeckt, die Krebszellen abtöten. Und andere, die als Biotreibstoff dienen können. Und nun dieser Fund: ein Pilz, der Plastik frißt. Pestalotiopsis microspora wächst in einer Ureinwohnersiedlung, im Stamm eines Guavenbaums. Der Dorfschamane behandelt mit den Früchten Durchfallerkrankungen. Für den weißgelben, feinfaserigen Schwamm mit den kleinen schwarzen Punkten in der Baumrinde hatte er sich nicht interessiert. Die Biologien dagegen schon. Denn dieser Pilz bildet ein Enzym, das Polyurethan zersetzt. Das ist der Kunststoff, aus dem unter anderem Bauschäume, Matratzen, Schuhsohlen, Klebstoffe und latexfreie Kondome bestehen.

Each year, students from Yale travel to the Ecuadoran rainforest to collect fungi that have not yet been researched. During their search they have already discovered species that kill cancer cells and others that can serve as biofuel. And now this: a fungus that eats plastic. Pestalotiopsis microspora grows in an indigenous settlement, in the trunk of a guava tree. The village shaman uses the fruit from this to treat diarrhea. He had no interest in the whitish-yellow, fibrous mushroom with the little black spots in the bark of the tree. The biologists did, however. Because this fungus forms an enzyme that decomposes polyurethane. This is the plastic used to make, among other things, construction foam, mattresses, the soles of shoes, adhesives, and latex-free condoms.
